Professional Activities
Professor King has been active in the field of Systems and Control since 1958, having been one of the first in the field of adaptive control. He specializes in the management and control of large scale industrial processes, intelligent control and computational intelligence, hierarchical decision support systems, self-organized systems and knowledge mining.
After many years in academe in the UK and the USA, he also worked in the process industry as Director of Industrial Information Systems for almost 10 years, gaining valuable practical experience in the field. On his return to academe he actively pursued reverse technology transfer to the classroom, teaching new generations of Systems Engineers the limitations of the theory in practice where effectiveness, reliability and simplicity of design are of paramount importance.
Since the late 1990’s he has focused on applying state of the art techniques of Computational Intelligence to the control of environmental processes with special emphasis on wastewater treatment. His latest research activities involve the development of intelligent control systems for large scale industrial processes, knowledge mining, sensor data integrity and smart sensors.
Professor King has served on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Control and the International Journal of Engineering Simulation for many years. He has been a reviewer for numerous journals including the International Journal of Control, IEEE journals, International Journal of Fuzzy Sets & Systems, Proceedings IEE and IEE Letters.
